We’ll hike the Sunset Trail on Mt Lemmon.
This is an out and back hike that is 5.3 miles long. Because the Marshall Gulch parking lot is closed, we’ll park at the new lot just down the street from the Cookie Cabin in Summerhaven. It’s a .75 mile walk to the trailhead so this will add 1.5 miles to the hike. From the lot to the turnaround and back, it’s a total distance of 6.8 miles. Options to turn around earlier (since it’s an out and back) if you’d like a shorter hike.
The trail offers a variety of natural features. Hikers will pass through a dense forest of pine and fir trees, cross several small streams, and have the opportunity to view a variety of local wildlife. The trail also offers views of notable landmarks such as the towering rock formations of the Santa Catalina Mountains and the expansive Tucson valley below. Hikers should be aware that the trail can be rocky and steep in places, and proper footwear is recommended.
Time - Meet in the new parking lot at 8am
Distance - 6.8 miles (5.3 + walk to/from parking lot to trailhead)
Elevation Gain - From the trailhead to turnaround, there is an elevation gain of 994 feet over 2.7 miles.
